The Plight Of The Date Palm: 1

Hello everyone!

In March, we had a worker with some great input about our work here and we hope it may give some insight about our farm as well! We asked Eoin if we could use his post because we would love to publish it. Here it is:

(March 2, 2016)

Hi! First off, my name is Eoin. I’ll be managing the blog on this website for the next while.

I came to the Valley of Peace a few days ago and have been enjoying working in the fields ever since – work that consisted mainly of digging holes, in order to replant young date palms from a neighbouring field. The sight of the new palms filling up what were previously empty spaces is a decidedly satisfying one.

Today, however, was even more satisfying: we turned on the taps.

In parallel to our work with the holes, many of the other workers here had been toiling tirelessly in order to ensure that the dream of a working irrigation system became a reality. After unrolling meters upon meters of plastic pipe – and connecting offshoots to each individual plant – we were ready to give it a go. We waited expectantly as the sound of rushing water filled the air. For a while, nothing. Until:

Hey, Presto! A problem. There wasn’t enough pressure coming through one of the main pipes to supply water to all of the plants that needed it.

And so it goes. Another pipe was called for and unrolled. It cost me a shoe. C’est la vie.

Tomorrow, we’ll see if the fruits of our labour paid off. For now, here are a couple photos of the day’s work. (pictures coming soon)

Feel free to contact or visit us through email, tel. phone, our Facebook page, YouTube channel for additional information.

An Adventure called The Valley of Peace: a small piece of the puzzle

The Valley of Peace has been a long standing organic peace community for many years. I would like to share some history pertaining to our farm and centre. You could call it some of the many stories, trials, and adventures of the Valley of Peace; a culmination of many small and grand rewards. We offer this post as a small starter and are wondering if you’d like us to keep doing this. Let us know!

In 1981, this farm was owned by Mohammed Atiyeh (62) and we have been cultivating date trees since 2013. And from then on, the journey goes on! Here, and in future posts, is a brief part of a description of the geography, culture, learning experience, history, farm background, weather, and stories you can find here. It sounds like a lot (!) but we will get there, “shwoyeh shwoyeh” (one step at a time/a little a little).

As we’ve stated in a previous post, our farm is located in a technically advantageous place for new travelers, taxi drivers, and local commuters or people from Palestine.  We believe that peace is in knowing and being less assuming of each other in order to support peace. Though there is segregation and bureaucracy, that is realistically expected. (Comment below if you would like to share more on this subject!) Many people who work in the taxi business stop by often to eat, rest, and have a cup of tea at the front entrance cafe. There are also travelers wishing to renew their Israeli visas after a short stay in Jordan and you are welcome to stay with us before your return. For more information on how to renew your visas, don’t hesitate to ask! You can find us on King Hussein Bridge Road and you may notice a few taxi cabs as well as a gate. And we go where the date palms grow. In Jordan, most taxi drivers are hardworking men and it’s extraordinarily superb that they can have a place to take a break, especially in the summer. Not to mention, it was quite an innovative idea to open a centre close to Allenby bridge. It is also uncommon to find many workers who are women in the taxi or service business or sometimes in general in Jordan. It is part of the Jordanian culture, but this open topic can definitely be argued.  We would like to know what our readers have experienced internationally or in their countries, have you experienced such minorities in other places? Comment below or let us know, we’re interested in what you have to say!

Also, people from all diversities enter through the King Hussein/ Allenby bridge. However, in order to enter from Israel to Jordan via this bridge, you will be required to present a pre arranged visa because they do not offer Jordan visas at the Allenby bridge border crossing on the spot. But when you cross, we at the farm have a lot of experience to share. Another tip we would like to share with travelers is that prior to arriving in Jordan, we suggest you apply for a Jordanian pass because it is better to purchase it before you arrive than after. Using this pass, you are eligible for tourism benefits and your entry fee is combined with other fees all in one price, such as tickets to Petra or Wadi Rum. Other benefits are included but feel free to check it out on the official website if you’re interested! Here is the link:
http://jordanpass.jo/

For travelers who would like to get a full experience, we would be happy to help you find your way around popular tourist sites, such as Aqaba, Wadi Rum, Wadi Musa, Amman, Madaba, etc. We are near the Dead Sea and in the middle of a politically hot region 300 meters away from the Jordanian border point, not far from the Jordan river and the Baptism site. You can go wherever in Jordan by bus for a small expense and each place has some local secrets. From our farm, you’re able to see the outskirts of Jerusalem and Jericho because we are so close to Israel and the Palestinian territory. By night, the city lights illuminate the mountain side in the distance. The mountain landscape also makes for a beautiful view and a great sunset. Photographers have been welcomed here many a times before.

At the lowest point on earth and, to some level, the most oxygen, this is a good place for anyone looking to reach and press the temporary refresh button in their life. In addition, if you suffer from health issues or asthma, we believe that this place is quite calming and therapeutic. Perhaps that is cause to share with you about a possible spa in the future at the Valley of Peace. For all types of people, we are thinking of creating a programme that allows guests to focus on themselves somewhat like a meditative programme and possibly incorporate the environment of the trees, farming activities, mountain landscape, ever changing sky, cuisine, yoga, sea salt, mud, pool, and other great ideas. If you’d like to give us feedback, we are very interested in your opinions so don’t hesitate to contact us!

We would like to update you on more stories and possibly even more future commemorations, testaments, and inspirational pillars for our life here. There is more to say than one post can describe! It is a great honor to be a witness to all of this, knowing that it has been happening for these many years, as well as for everyone involved to be a part of it as well. In addition, there are more pieces to the puzzle to be shared/learnt of and many facts about the place. If you’d like to continue to know more about the farm or info related to this post, comment or subscribe and let us know! We are truly here to help you.

The Animals of the Valley of Peace: Meet our Furry Friends!

Welcome to Wadi Al-Salaam (Valley of Peace)!

At the valley of peace, one of our many tasks among our hobbyist activities is taking care of the animals. The cats and dogs here are domestic, social, and incredibly amicable. The contentment and happiness they offer far outweigh the minor troubles of being their human pillow [in the ruthless, toothy way :)] or preventing bouts between dogs, cats, and other miscellaneous creatures. However, the small ones are untrained. If you are into training kittens and puppies or are good with animals, we welcome you to have a stay!

Our family of animals seem to be growing rapidly. On April 21, we discovered a litter of kittens inside a container after housing another litter of kittens inside the resident building. The newly found kittens were being cared for by Sasha; a queenly, white and long-haired female cat. If you are interested, help us find a home for the kittens! Please contact us for more details.

The cats, dogs, birds, wildlife, and even the bugs are one of the many joys and personal profits of the farm. Currently, we have two white, female cats, two male cats, a puppy named Lucy, two litters of kitten, and a newly found litter of puppies. They love visitors and new friends–and they will quickly become akin to animal loving people. The Valley of Peace including the animals are as detached as possible from the biases and regular norms and it would be great to spread the word of peace!

Weekly Update: Life at the Valley of Peace and Ongoing Projects

Hello everyone!

We are glad to share with you that the farm is growing in all directions from our date palms to our renewed building structures and we would like to update you on what has been going on this week as well as what there is to come in the following weeks. Firstly, we would like to say thank you to our support network of workers, volunteers, friends, and family for allowing our projects to come to life and graduate toward success. It is because of all the past and current supporters that the farm’s ideas and aspirations were able to become implemented projects. The farm is wishing you a welcoming shout out. Also, local or international, the farm cannot stress enough how important it is to develop intercultural relations and to learn from one another through daily life together.

The renovation of the volunteer guest house continues to progress with the addition of great ideas and creativity. There will be three rooms within one building complex which we are continuing to organise the furniture and architectural elements–as well as the aesthetic appeal of the place. If you have a knack for interior design and artistry, stop by and feel free to be creative! Thanks to our many volunteers from all over the world, the painting job for the walls of the new rooms are coming to a finish and it looks great! We are planning on creating separate dormitories for a girl’s division and boy’s division however this decision is open for future members to choose where they are most comfortable. There is accommodation space for 5-7 guests and this includes two big beds, two small beds, and a couch. We will keep you updated and look forward to meeting new guests!

The Valley of Peace is also a fine place to visit for a tour around the farm. We are planning on opening a building structure for service as a place for dining and events–called “The Project”. For new readers and visitors, it is a series of arches creating a paved hall that’s suitable for meals, weddings, exhibitions, parties, and casual get-togethers. There is also a roof that can be used for guests overnight and a kitchen at the lower level. Also visit our sharing tree or the entrance cafe and you will be welcomed with friendly, inviting people. We would like everyone here to feel included in this community and have an enjoyable time. In addition, our farm is located in a technically advantageous place for new travelers, taxi drivers, and local commuters. We will have an upcoming post on more about this. The farm is also developing new indoor and outdoor activities for children and youth, which adults can enjoy as well. Some ideas include a renewed Dead Sea swimming pool, table tennis, music night/sessions, teaching farming practices and languages, and a planetarium. It is very exciting to start initiating these new recreations and furthering the potential of the farm with future possibilities.

One of the most important things we are maintaining daily or weekly are the date palms and every week we have hard workers climbing the trees and organising the branches to promote a good harvest in the summer/fall. Feel free to see the progress of our date trees, taste them for free, and even buy a whole branch of dates. You are more than welcome to accompany our group of workers on their excursions. Recently, Sheikh Hassan educated new and eager workers how to trim the branches, tie the date bunches, and help longer and shorter branches grow evenly. It was good to see the cultural exchange at work and revealing, literally, a timeless, age old art as well as a display of years of experience working within the field of agriculture. Stay in tune for more about the practice of date farming, sustainable living, permaculture, and our next post about a brief history on the Valley of Peace and the kind of rich and rare learning experience that we can offer here!

**More pictures soon to come! Tune in for an upcoming gallery of life at Wadi Al Salaam

Current Projects

Current Projects (Updated 20 February, 2016):

1. We are currently working on renovating a courtyard complex at the entrance to farm (which houses a cafe run by taxi drivers) which will become rent-able rooms for people stuck at the border and a living space for volunteers. We need people to help clean the space, assist in construction, and add their own artistic expertise!

2. EID AL-KHUBBAYZA – we have sent an open invitation to locals and friends to come to the farm to pick and cook their own Khubbayza (a wildly popular leafy green plant). We will help them prepare this in a sauteed dish served with vegetables from the farm. This ongoing program at our farm was recently featured on Jordanian national television:

WATCH: Jordanian Television on Eid alKhubbayza

3. DATE PALMS – harvesting takes place in August, but soon we will be replanting seedlings and small trees to a new plot. The ground of the date palm orchard also needs to be cleared of dead branches and bramble. Furthermore, we need helpers to remove the grass and weeds around the base of the trees to make the irrigation system more efficient.

4. LASERS – If you know anything about lasers, we certainly have a project for you… it is a great hope that by shooting lasers across the Jordan Valley towards our friends at ECOME, a Palestinian-Israeli peace project near Jericho, we can symbolically restore a historic connection between the people of Jericho in Palestine and Shuneh here in Jordan. We hope to bridge divides at this farm by the Bridge, with the knowledge that peace building starts at a local level.

Sending signals across the valley 😉

Welcome to Peace Wadi!

Peace Wadi, the Valley of Peace, is a peace project in the Jordan Valley close to the border with Palestine. We farm dates and vegetables, but also act as a center for recreation, ecological awareness and exchange of ideas. Find out more at “Our Vision.”

Current projects

Come all together and enjoy our dates! Harvesting time is now at the peak, but still there are many ripe dates which can be eaten right away. You are highly welcome to taste for free at our farm! Of course buying a whole branch of dates is also possible. Enjoy!
